Bespoke family villa with Mediterranean flair
CEO Baufritz (UK) Ltd.
Oliver Rehm
"House Willett embodies Baufritz’s principles of sustainable, human-centred architecture, blending the client’s eco-conscious ethos with Mediterranean-inspired elegance. The design balances openness and intimacy, technology and craftsmanship, for a home that is both deeply personal and future-proof."
The open plan living and dining room on the ground floor is designed as a welcoming, flowing space for family life and entertaining guests. Concealed sliding pocket doors between the rooms allow for more privacy if needed. When not in use, they slide neatly into the wall, making them invisible.
The first impression on entering the house is the grand, sweeping timber staircase – a masterpiece of German craftsmanship. It is set against a Volimea-finished wall in dark grey. This combination of natural colours, textures and timber elements is repeated throughout the house. Daylight floods in through a double-height, fully glazed corner window with a post and beam construction.
The volumes at the back of House Willet project into the garden at various angles, allowing natural light to enter the rooms from different directions. A combination of flat and hipped roofs adds architectural interest, with the pitch chosen to maximise the yield from solar panels. The living areas at the back of the house open onto the large terrace, creating a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors.
The garden is designed for relaxation and enjoyment, with large terraces, a swimming pool, an outdoor kitchen and a pétanque court. Lush vegetation with mature trees, olive trees and palm-like plants in earthenware pots add to the Mediterranean feel. Stone steps leading to the lawn emphasize the connection with nature.
The owners are committed to sustainability and high quality and wanted their new home to reflect these values. The house is extremely energy efficient, with underfloor heating, an air source heat pump and photovoltaic panels on the roof. A ventilation system with heat exchange ensures a supply of fresh air, improving the indoor air quality and helping to reduce heat loss. Three Tesla Powerwall batteries store excess energy so that it can be used day and night, eliminating reliance on external sources.
The house is sustainable in more than one sense. An e-charger is available to power the Microlino electric car the owners use for daily errands and driving short distances. This battery-powered bubble car draws admiring looks wherever they go. But the house is also fit for the future in other ways: The owners want to be able to live in their home for many years to come. One of the downstairs rooms can be converted into a ground-floor bedroom, and a walk-in shower added to the plant room or the guest WC. A lift has also been installed.
