Sandra Schelz and Frédéric Josué chose to have a home built based on our popular Scandinavian home design, Edition Rot, more than ten years ago.
'In actual fact, we never wanted a wooden façade. However, seeing the red show house completely turned that notion on its head. It was truly love at first sight," says Sandra. The couple recently sent us a delightful email with photos of their beautiful home and just one line: "We are still very happy!" We can tell! Everything is very well looked after, the garden blooming with creativity and imagination, and the façade has recently been repainted.
Like most clients building their own home, this French-German couple looked at a number of show homes, comparing the furnishings and construction methods used. They came to the conclusion that they 'did not want polystyrene in the walls, foil insulation, or plastic windows.' The two were impressed by Baufritz's consistent use of environmentally friendly and sustainable construction methods, the non-toxic natural wood shaving insulation, and the patented electrosmog protection technology, which blocks up to 90 per cent of all high-frequency mobile phone radiation. Back then, they were a family of two, but they were planning to start a family and wanted their children to grow up in a healthy environment. Their eldest daughter Maya was born in 2006, followed by Annika three years later.
Sandra was particularly impressed by the perfectly matched furnishings and comfortable atmosphere within the show house. Her husband especially liked the distinctive architectural details, including the gable glazing, the covered loggia, and the round window on the ground floor. The couple opted for the attractively priced standard comfort package during their design consultation at the HausSchneiderei. Frédéric, who works as a financial controller in Munich, spends his day performing complicated calculations, so always had a good handle on the budget. 'My husband is a walking Excel spreadsheet! That ensured we didn't overspend.' Sandra explains. 'We also really appreciated getting a fixed quotation for the costs, avoiding expensive supplementary financing.'
The couple kept to the original ground plan with the trusted combined living, dining, and kitchen concept to provide a communicative family centre on the ground floor. Together with a cousin, a carpenter by trade, they added a small pantry, which was something of a must. The family installed the wooden planks and wooden ceilings by themselves. The bedrooms and bathrooms are all located on the upper floor. Frédéric Josué also left nothing to chance when it came to the room planning. Before completing the contract of sale, he created a to-scale model of the house from cardboard, painting on doors and cutting out windows. 'Then it transpired that the porthole window we'd chosen was too small. His miniature model of our future home meant we were able to correct our decision in time,' says the happy lady of the house.
And if they could do it all again, what would the couple do differently? 'We decided not to have a ventilation or air circulation system installed because of the cost. We wouldn't go without this additional improvement to the indoor climate if we were doing this again. The excellent thermal insulation means our annual energy consumption of twelve kilowatt hours per square metre is well below the requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance applicable at that time.' Back then, the couple opted only for a gas boiler. The extensive solar panels were only added to the roof later. These are completely autonomous and serve only to generate electricity that is fed into the public grid for a profit.
The family's most recent project was to construct a high bed for the eldest daughter. The couple gave Baufritz a call because they could no longer find all the plans that indicated where the timber frame's beams, onto which the bed could be mounted, are located. 'The person on the other end of the line said "No problem", and quickly found the documents we needed." Sandra Schelz explains. 'Brilliant service – we were really surprised.' Both then spontaneously add: 'Ten years later, we would still build with Baufritz!'
We are of course delighted by this and will continue to do everything we can to make our customers happy.
